2011 IAITAM Conference Promotes ISO SAM Standards

As usual, the 2011 IAITAM conference was very well attended and the only complaint I heard was the problem of having too many interesting speakers presenting at the same time (6 different tracks over a period of 3 days provides a lot to choose from)!

IAITAM has played a very active role in the effort to create and promote SAM standards to the community.  IAITAM is a Category C Liasion to Working Group 21 (WG21) which is the group focused on developing SAM standards.  IAITAM clearly sees the ISO SAM standards as a benefit for the whole community and is working hard to ensure the message is distributed as far and wide as possible.  The entire ISO team would like to thank IAITAM for this on-going and very active support!

ISO Standards were a large part of the conversation at this conference. There was an ISO table in the exhibition hall providing time for experts in the SAM standards to talk with attendees and providing numerous documents that are of use to members of the SAM ecosystem. The ISO booth also included a book signing by the author of the book “Software Life Cycle Management Standards” which focuses on the SAM standards developed by ISO working group 21.

The printed material disappeared quickly as attendees focused on software licensing and procurement instantly realized their value.  Below are links to the electronic versions of these documents:
The book on SAM standards can be purchased from many sites including Amazon.com.

The ISO booth was very popular, but the most interesting image likely comes from the visit from Scott Lemm (Stefanini TechTeam SAM consultant) who was presenting a session at the conference called, “The Final Frontier”.  Based on what we saw at the IAITAM conference, SWID tags and other ISO standards are certainly the future of IT management.

The IAITAM conference ended with a panel session on the ISO SAM standards. This session was very interactive, informative and even though it was a discussion on standards, included a reasonable amount of humor. The following individuals participated in the ISO panel discussion:

Thank you to all who took part in the panel discussion – the community focused on improving IT processes through standards has grown significantly stronger over the last few years as more members have joined the various development groups (DG’s). We’ve also seen a marked increase of interest in the various SAM standards that are published and those that are under development.
